An inspiring week in Plymouth attending the Balance Unbalance 2017 conference. A trans-disciplinary exploration of A Sense of Place across art, technology, science, ecology, social conscience, and imagined futures.
I presented a research paper discussing the experience of presence, exhibited the Orbit Series at Ocean Studios, Royal Willian Yard (continues until Sun Sept 10th) and screened RCA Fulldome Research Group films in the i-Dat.org Immersive Vision Theatre.
Conference highlights included a group excursion to the Eden Project, the exquisite smell of frangipani (a smell of summer), and inspiring conversations with new networks of like-minded artists, researchers and designers. A welcome break from my summer of rigorous academic writing.
The Orbit Series prints are signed, framed and ready to travel tomorrow. The full series (13 prints) will be exhibited next week at the Ocean Studios Gallery in Royal William Yard, Plymouth, as part of the Balance Unbalance 2017 Conference.
A day in the office and it’s all about globes and spheres in my world. The eye, the visual field, the architectural dome, world views and the celestial sphere (courtesy of James J. Gibson, Tim Ingold and David McConville).
Images sourced from a beautiful (but unnameable) book of royalty free wood engravings I once discovered in a charity shop, but no longer own.
A day in the workshop printing editions of my Orbit Series with RCA print master and technician Andy Richardson. Followed by tea, cake and a book binding planning meeting with designer Helga Schmid.
The Orbit Series will be exhibited at Royal William Yard in Plymouth during the Balance-Unbalance Conference in Plymouth in August 2017. A limited edition A Year of Light artist’s book will be published in September 2017.
A day in the stairwell with Helga Schmid, installing her beautiful research work for Show RCA 2017.
Watching blue sky and clouds reflected in my table from a window above.
Four fundamental interactions between light and matter:
emission, transmission, reflection, and absorption.
Packing my desk.
RCA School of Communication move to White City.
I’ve learned a lot looking out this window.
Day out. Newport Street Gallery and Tate Britain.
