The Motion of Matter was a practice-based research project and exhibition in collaboration with artist Johanna Bolton based upon Aristotle’s description of motion ‘as the passage of matter into form’. Aristotle postulated that no observation of the physical world could ignore the principles of motion. He classified motion into four categories: motion which affects the substance of a thing; motion which brings about changes in quality; motion which brings about changes in quantity and motion which brings about locomotion.
Through structured and detailed observations, The Motion of Matter investigates the multitude of ways motion changes our interpretations of and interactions with the material world. The exhibition includes two and three dimensional objects, moving image, light, shadow and projection, artist’s books and performance.
The exhibition took place at The Rum Factory Project Space, London from 24 – 29 November 2015.
