Soundscapes is an artistic immersive fulldome experience and exhibition designed to connect audiences to the natural landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales. It combines the simple, gentle power of classical music compositions and 360° videography projected inside a unique architect designed wooden hemispherical dome.
The project was conceived by composer Ben Crick and immersive media artist Michaela French, and developed in collaboration with an extraordinary group of creatives led by Northumbria University Architecture Department’s Peter Dixon.
While the audio-visual experience is the main focus of the work, the physical structure of the Bentwood Dome also contributes to the audience experience through its sustainable approach to construction and its beautiful aesthetic. This bespoke timber structure was designed and manufactured by Adam Moore at Hadley Interiors with structural engineering by Anton Sawicki and Buro Happold. Following a rigorous and inventive research & development process, the dome panels were meticulously steamed and moulded to create a perfect internal hemispheric projection surface. The panels are held together with traditional viking-style wooden peg joints that lock securely into the floor with robust tenon & mortise joints to create a free-standing, self-supporting structure.
Soundscapes was made in collaboration with Skipton Camerata and Skipton Town Hall. The project was funded by Arts Council England, Skipton Building Society and The Tarn Moor Estate.
